Now, however, the whole of KS2 are totally fired up with it and the consistency it has brought to our teaching is great! On top of that, and most importantly of all for me the children are loving it and are having loads of fun. If Ofsted were to come in now they would see text maps throughout KS2 and boxed up texts all over the place!

Its been uplifting, for me, to see the way staff have embraced it. I began by writing an overview of three text types we were all going to cover from September to December. Our school has developed an excellent Creative Curriculum so I planned the work around our whole-school theme: My Place in Space. Although we had aimed for each module to take approximately 3 weeks, as ever, with other things happening in school, the modules are taking longer to cover. We had an alienologist my husband! For added effect, we had rigged up a smoke machine, so every now and then smoke billowed from the rocket — it was superb!

We held an emergency assembly in the hall where the Headteacher explained to the children that she had been called out in the night etc etc. Before class print out the spaceship patterns and cut them out. To make the spaceship fold a paper plate in half and use the "cutting pattern" to cut a hole in the paper plate. Place the pattern in the center of the folded edge and trace around the pattern. Cut out the shape from the paper plate by first cutting a slit through the folded edge of the paper plate and then opening the plate to cut the rest out.

Fold back the flap you cut in the paper plate. Glue the edge of the paper plate together. In class have your children paint or color the paper plate and then glue on craft foam shapes or gems to decorate. Have your students color the aliens, cut them out, and then glue them to craft sticks to make puppets. If you are using this craft with the "Aliens Love Underpants" series, don't have your students glue the aliens to the craft stick until they have made underpants for their aliens.

See below. Watch a "View it and Do it! Have your children draw their own aliens or use the printable patterns. Then have them make underpants for their aliens by tracing around the outside of the aliens and filling in the missing lines to make underpants shapes.

Show them how to make tabs on the sides of their patterns so they can fold them back and attach the underpants to the aliens. They will discover the limitless worlds they can visit through books and enjoy sharing those worlds with their classmates. Fold a paper plate in half. Cut a small slit on on the folded edge of the paper plate along the outer edge of the inside circle so that you can insert your scissors.
